Anyone who loves skiing or boarding will not have missed that Japan is the place to go for endless light powder. So, some friends from GO Heli & Cat Skiing and I, Charlotta Lyon, decided to check out if skiing in Japan lives up to its buzz. After 12 packed days with 5 stops to get a big taste of what Japan has to offer, let me start with the conclusion… YES!
Here’s a few reasons why I simply loved it:
Fresh powder and making the first tracks everyday… simply by heading up the local ski lift. That almost unheard of anywhere else but that became the new normal when skiing in Japan.
THE CULINARY EXPERIENCE
Japanese, do everything with meticulous care and style. Whether it’s the velvet sake bottle, the sushi chefs handling to prepare every bite, the perfect sphere of ice in the Nikka whiskey chopped by the bartender, or the entrance the restaurant almost buried in snow and lit up with lanterns
…another day skiing in Japan…
TRAVEL IN STYLE WITH THE BULLET TRAIN
Sure, domestic flights works but as we were looking for the Japanese experience for comfortable, fast travel the natural pick was the bullet train, called Shinkansen trains. Traveling up to 320 km/h it’s a way better option to go across the country.
Japanese hot springs, called onsen, are literally everywhere and they are amazing. Almost every hotel, even small ones have an onsen facility or offer access to an onsen close by. The perfect way to end a day of deep powder skiing in Japan. Or why not a public hot footbath in a street corner if you don’t have time to soak completely in the close-by onsen.
WHERE ELSE IS IT POSSIBLE TO SKI A LIVE VOLCANO
At top of the ropeway (the Japanese way to say Cabin) the volcano is in full view. And yes, it’s an awesome tour to skin up the volcano, drop in and ski through the area with the small gas holes. And the options to find fresh powder to the base are endless!
MEET THE SNOW MONKEYS
Every day these snow monkeys head down from the forest to enjoy the onsen. They looked at all the tourists as if we were all bunch of idiots… standing in the cold while the snow monkeys enjoyed the hot bath.
THE JAPANESE WAY
Do I need to say anything else…
AGAIN, THE POWDER
I’m serious, we took this sequence ourselves… awesome powder skiing in Japan!
BUT… WHERE ARE ALL THE GIRLS?
I can’t count the number of groups of only guys I ran into in Japan. Seems to be the ultimate ‘week away from…’. But seriously! All you girls out there, that love powder skiing… if you sent you’re hubby off with his friends instead of going there yourself. You’re missing out!
Do what I’m doing right now instead… planning my next trip to go skiing in Japan.
